Let them eat cake
Last but not least, the cake makes a statement
By Erika Howsare
Wedding cakes when your mother got married were ratherpredictable affairs:You had your white icing, your tiers and your figurine toppers. Well, this ain’t your mama’s wedding. Any color, design or flavor you want, you can probably get—so think of the cake, as you do with your dress and your first dance, as a chance to express yourself.
We asked local cake expert Anita Gupta (malihacreations.com) to turn her designer’s eye toward a few different themes that suit different types of weddings. One is formal, one’s more casual and the third is downright funky. Which one matches your idea of delicious?
All dressed up
Here’s a proper cake: classic shape, demure white fondant icing and a retro rhinestone broach to setoff the enormous blue bow that
cascades over the cake’s tiers. If you’re a traditional gal who wants to make sure Grandma approves as well as your
ApartmentTherapy.com- reading friends, this is your cake.
Easy does it
Lemon cupcakes topped with real lavender and herbs, and wrapped indelicate paper collars,
have a fun personality perfect for the bride who’s getting married outside and running off to Cancun the next day. Think of the time you’ll save on cake-cutting!
Topsy turvy
No, you haven’t had too much champagne. You’re just feasting your eyes on Gupta’s “Papillon d’or” (golden butterfly) cake, which provides a whimsical landing place for gumpaste butterflies as well as the incredulous gazes of your guests. If you aim to turn heads, this cake’s for you.
